Pier Drilling Challenges: Precision, Problem-Solving, and Teamwork in Action
This project had a lot of moving parts—from public interaction to complex drilling conditions. Working on the pier drew plenty of attention. Curious residents stopped to ask questions, snap photos, and record videos, while city officials came out to observe the work firsthand. Through it all, our crew handled every interaction with professionalism and respect, representing Pacific Drilling Co. with pride.
Drilling from Deck to Sea Floor
The drilling itself was no small task. Our objective was to drill from the pier deck down to the sea floor, a setup that brought its own challenges. Keeping the casing straight was difficult—solid rock protruded from the sandy bottom, causing the guide rod to bounce instead of penetrating cleanly. Once the crew managed to break through, sealing the hole presented another challenge. Working below the waterline meant there was no direct access to the contact point on the sea floor, which required careful adjustment and teamwork to stabilize and seal the hole properly.
Managing Water Supply on the Pier
Water management quickly became one of the toughest obstacles. Poor circulation meant we needed a constant supply of fresh water. With strict weight limitations on the pier, we couldn’t use heavy water trucks. Instead, our crew used personal trucks to transport water from a hydrant near the pier entrance—making trips back and forth all day. Without their persistence and resourcefulness, the job couldn’t have moved forward.
Adapting to Equipment Challenges
The project also involved using a new casing advancement system, which came with a learning curve. Midway through, the advancement bit became lodged in the casing, forcing the crew to pull the entire string to break it free. Thanks to Tim’s redesigned bit, we were able to get back on track quickly. Later, while rock coring, the outer casing threaded apart and broke in two—leaving half of it on the sea floor.
To recover, salvage divers were called in to retrieve and reposition the casing so drilling could continue. Once the equipment was reset, the team resumed rock coring and successfully retrieved quality samples to complete the boring.
Teamwork and Professionalism Under Pressure
This was the only boring that presented such major setbacks, but it tested every skill our crew had—from technical expertise to problem-solving under pressure. Through it all, Gerardo and Toby led by example, staying calm, focused, and professional despite multiple challenges and an audience watching every move.
Their ability to adapt in real time, work safely, and deliver results under tough conditions is what sets Pacific Drilling Co. apart. Projects like this one highlight what our crews do best: combine field expertise with determination to get the job done right.
